Welcome everyone to the XVII National and International Congress of Paleopathology, which will be held in the City of Segovia, during the days of September 26th, 27th, and 28th, 2024.

Paleopathology is a scientific discipline that brings together the interests of physicians, anthropologists, archaeologists, and historians.

The reconstruction of a society from the past cannot be fully accomplished without a systematic and careful study of the pathologies suffered by its individuals, attempts at healing, the care received by the sick, and the treatments performed, according to the development of medical science and the customs of that particular culture.

The effort of paleopathologists around the world has succeeded in recognizing this science as essential within the studies of past populations. Disease and death are part of life, so a coordinated scientific method among different professionals is essential to carry out this task of understanding human populations that have already disappeared, of which, in many cases, only their skeletal or mummified remains remain.

It is an honor for the city of Segovia to receive the assignment of hosting the XVII National and International Congress of Paleopathology.

Segovia is a city located northwest of Madrid, in the region of Castilla y León. Its proximity to Madrid (about 100 km), and its excellent communication by buses, high-speed trains, and highways, make this wonderful town a perfect meeting place.

Centuries of settlement have resulted in a rich architectural legacy, including medieval walls, Romanesque churches, an ancient royal palace, and a Gothic cathedral. But undoubtedly, it is the famous Roman aqueduct, located in the Plaza del Azoguejo, in the heart of the city, with over 160 arches, most of them made of original dry-assembled granite, the jewel of this welcoming city.

The congress venue will be at the Church of San Juan de los Caballeros, located in Plaza de Colmenares, within the old town of Segovia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is a church that is not used for worship and is part of the Segovia Museum.

It is a pleasure for the Congress Organization to have the collaborative commitment of the Segovia Museum (Junta de Castilla y León), which will actively sponsor the development of the event.
